The origin of how Hal come up with this oath can be traced back to to issue #10 of the Green Lantern comic series(January-February 1962) in the story ‘THE ORIGIN OF GREEN LANTERN’S OATH’.
In the story, Hal Jordan explained to his trusted friend Tom ‘Pieface’ Kalmaku the origin of the oath. This, according to Hal, was based on three adventures he had in his first week as the superhero known as the Green Lantern: In Brightest Day: Robbers were on an attempt to prey on a Bank in Coast City wherein Hal is also present. The robbers used a magnesium bomb that sent out a very bright light that disabled everyone to see (except for the robbers that used a special goggle) during that moment, including Hal Jordan. The robbers were successful to get money off the bank, however the Green-Clad superhero was able to caught them using his power ring to act like a radar transmitter that enabled him to see the robbers’ movement despite the effects of the bomb’s intense light.
In Blackest Night: Hal Jordan learned about train robbers who hid in Sierro Hills where nobody can follow them. Hal as the Green Lantern then went to Sierro Hills to go after the robbers. He saw the robbers and followed them inside a cave wherein a black fog makes it impossible light to penetrate. He then used his power ring to make the robbers glow thus enabled him to catch them.
No evil shall escape my sight: The office safe where the company’s payroll is kept was stolen from Ferris Aircraft. The Green-Clad superhero figured out that the robbers might try to be in a distant location and blow the safe to open it without distracting attention. With that idea in mind, our superhero used his power ring to create a belt of radiation all around Ferris Company area that would detect suspicious tremors that would probably come from the robbers. The radiation then picked up something to which Green Lantern followed. He then found the robbers with the safe. After a short struggle, the Green-Clad superhero caught them.
Hal then just added the remaining lines to rhyme, thus the oath finally came to be.

Established over 50 years ago, Bournemouth’s Pine Walk Art Exhibition is one of the longest running open-air art displays in the UK. A carnival procession winds its way through the streets to Winton recreation ground, where local dancers and youth bands will perform live onstage. Formerly known as the Bournemouth Regatta, the Carnival takes place in a variety of locations in and around Bournemouth. There are parades, costumes, dancers and band performances. For the fifth year running, the Bournemouth Air Festival returns to the seafront. Biplanes, helicopters and jet fighters will perform spectacular displays of aerobatics. The Royal Navy will also be present and the Royal Marines will demonstrate beach assaults. There will also be firework displays, balloon glows, street entertainers, live bands and film screenings. There’s even an interactive military village. All of this is completely free. The Air Festival runs from the 30th August to the 2nd September.

]]>In Laughable Loves we are presented with characters that often seem to behave like cut-outs being pushed across a stage whose set is alien to them. They often seem only partially engaged with their own lives, even lost in their surroundings, no matter how familiar they are claimed to be. They are apparently controlled by others, perhaps by forces not only beyond their control, but also beyond their influence, even beyond their experience.
On the surface, however, this is not a book about totalitarianism or overt control. There are hardly any overtly political themes or references. As a background, as might be expected, this seems to be taken as given. There are references to a faceless system here and there, but this in no Kafka-esque construction of an all-embracing and constraining reality. In Laughable Loves Milan Kundera seems to imprison people primarily within the demands of their own humanity. They seem to be enslaved by their own, inevitable, controllable but not controlled urges. This is fundamental behaviour that they think they can control, but the fact that they cannot confirms that it controls them.
And, of course, the urge of sex, the reality of sex, the realisation of sex, the promise of sex, the deferment of sex, the doing of sex, all of these vie for the forefront of consciousness, their common factor apparently both the motive and the end of all intent. We may play with gods, careers, influence or power, but our ultimate and single-minded motive is the achievement of the momentary majesty of sexual communion.
In his film, Casanova may have been likened to an erectile clockwork toy, pre-ordained by virtue of inevitable, hard-wired mechanism to perform whenever wound up. And in this book, Kundera presents people who mimic such automata, except that occasionally a spring gives, or a cog slips. “Ah, ladies and gentlemen,” he writes, “a man lives a sad life when he cannot take anyone or anything seriously.” But almost no-one in these stories is eventually serious about anything, except the sex drive that controls them and whose realisation so often results in no more than sensations of the ephemeral. Before flying, ask yourself if you can travel by car or train. Take public transportation to and from the airport whenever it’s possible. Bring your own snacks and decline drinks, napkins and plastic cups offered on the plane.
Realize that you might be skiing at a resort that doesn’t monitor its carbon emissions. Long-term, the very commodity they’re selling (snowfall) could diminish with climate change. Eating at certain seafood restaurants, while enjoyable, may be purchasing their food from overfished waters. “Be an educated traveler and make a difference when you can,” says Bianchi.
Green Your Hotel and Resort Stays.
Bring home half-used bottles of shampoo and lotions. Use them up and recycle the containers. Look for water-saving tips from your hotel. Now, many offer water conservation programs that ask you to reuse your towels and bed linens the next day.
Vacation with a Purpose.
“Purposeful vacations take into account the social imprint of your vacation as well as the ecological practices of the places you visit,” says Bianchi.
Consider an Eco-Vacation, a Mission Project or a Conservation Trip.
Your local church or park district may offer trips and ecotourism vacations to destinations where you and your family can stay together. Cleaning up trails, helping to create a habitat for endangered wildlife and serving needy families worldwide are among the many vacation opportunities.

Greening Your Worship
Your place of worship (or any other community setting you experience, including work) may ignore promoting an eco-friendly atmosphere. “Turns out the very buildings that were designed to proclaim the wonders of the God of the universe are some of the least green places in the country,” says Bianchi.
Styrofoam cups, individualized creamer packets and sugars, stir sticks, multi-page bulletins, and company newsletters printed with petroleum-based ink (instead of eco-friendly soy-based inks) are among the eco-savvy detractors.
“Greening up the church is not a fad or some hippie luxury; it is good stewardship and it is our future,” she says. Bianchi suggests two levels to start greening your worship:
1. Begin with your senior pastor, minister, rabbi, etc. A simple meeting with him or her can initiate the dialogue. Further talks can convene with committees, elders, trustees, and others leaders. Tap into your congregation’s professional talents, including architects, engineers and HVAC experts.
Discuss who will lead the greening efforts. It may or may not be you. The green team will need to research recycling options, reasonable tweaks in lighting and energy and other common sense, eco-friendly adaptations.
2. Use personal, covert greening efforts if you meet congregational resistance. This includes turning off lights in classrooms, and collecting and recycling church bulletins and newsletters on your own.
A universal response from churches, nonprofits and other organizations that resist going green is cost. Today, many establishments are working with limited funds.
Greening a place can appear to be pricey. Waste haulers may charge additional fees to remove recyclables. Recycling bins can be costly and purchasing fair-trade coffee and teas may sell for more, but, once done, long-term savings often result.
In the church, some will question if a greener life is theologically supported. Going green will have its detractors in any setting.
Planting a Tree
None of us can save the world on our own, but we can each make a difference. Bianchi mentions Wangari Maathai, a Kenyan activist who, in 2004, won the Nobel Peace Prize. Maathai says one thing we can do to fight environmental injustice, is plant a tree. It’s something we can all manage. Plant something green whether you live in a high rise, farm or anywhere else. Plunge your hands into the dirt and bring forth life.

3. It will take you hours to complete - FALSE ( Depends on the scope of the service, but not more than 1 & 1/2 hours ).
4. It is very dangerous - FALSE ( If approached incorrectly it can be dangerous, but if you are prepared and not worried about breaking a nail and getting a little dirty, the basic service is extremely simple ).
Preparation is key. I have seen so many people get frustrated and so much time wasted because of ill preparation. I cannot stress the importance of been properly prepared. By prepared I mean firstly, have the correct tools for the job on hand before commencing any work on the vehicle, most of you will have all the tools you’ll need if you have a general tool kit apart from maybe the oil filter removal tools and the spark plug socket.
A good tip if you cannot take in a sample of the parts needed is to take a photo of the oil filter, air filter, fuel filter and spark plugs if you can, just as a reference when you go purchase the spares needed. You can show the clerk the photos and they will assist you in the correct tools necessary. Most auto spares outlets will have all the data on sizes of plugs and sockets needed, so it should not be a problem getting everything you need under one roof. Don’t forget to put hand cleaner on your shopping list too.
Secondly, pick a good work area to carry out the service. If you have a lock-up garage, make sure you have enough room around the entire vehicle to move freely with no obstructions. If you plan on working outdoors or in an open area make sure the weather will hold up long enough for you to complete the job at hand. Nothing is worse than having to change plan while you are halfway through the service or when the vehicle is immobile.
Thirdly and most important of all is safety, my motto been ‘Better Safe Than Sorry’. Never try and do something that doesn’t look right or feel right, chances are it isn’t. Be aware that if you do not pay attention to things around you and in front of you, the consequences could be great. A good practice is to have a fire extinguisher handy at all times and a bucket of clean water in case of an emergency. Remember, wearing protective latex gloves not only protects your hands from the chemicals, but also helps keep hands clean and nobody will think less of you, trust me, lol.
Now that we have got that out of the way, let us get down and dirty shall we.
The basis for servicing your vehicle is the oil in you engine picks up impurities as it flows through and lubricates your engine components, thus the necessity of changing the oil on a regular basis at least. Apply parking brake and engage park ‘ P ‘ on automatic transmissions. Do not put a vehicle into gear on manual gearboxes as to prevent the vehicle from jumping forward if the vehicle is started accidentally. Make sure your vehicle is on a level surface before jacking up the vehicle. If you are able to locate and reach the sump plug ( a bolt were the engine oil is drained from, usually located on the lowest part of the engine ) then it will not be necessary to jack the vehicle up.
Your vehicle should be at operating temperature ie. the engine should be warm so that draining the oil is not only quicker but allows all of the oil to drain. Cold oil doesn’t flow as easy and sticks to components in your engine. I usually let the oil drain while I carry out the rest of the service, in doing so I not only cut out a lot of time waiting for the oil to drain but also insure all of the oil is drained from the engine. If your vehicle has an oil filter that is located at the top of the engine, open the filter before draining as oil does lay in the housing and this could lead to over filling the engine, which is not a good thing. Oil draining/drained? Good, lets move on.
Now that we have got the oil draining, we can move on to replacing the other spares we bought earlier. Let us move to your air filter which is very simple ( a few nuts or screws if that ) to change. Your air filter is located before your intake manifold, which is the air your engine is sucking in. It is usually located in some kind of plastic housing depending on the model and vehicle. If you have a carburettor on your engine, the air filter is more often then not fitted directly on to the top of it. Once you have opened the air filter housing via clips or a few nuts, pull the filter out and install the new filter in reverse order making sure firstly, the new filter is the correct filter and that the housing is put back correctly and secured. Woohoo, you have replaced your air filter, well done.
Next is your spark plugs, not difficult at all but a little more labour involved here. Most of today’s vehicles have sound deadening engine covers that either clip, screw or bolt onto the engine. This will have to be removed in order to get to the spark plugs comfortably. Some vehicles have the spark plugs exposed with HT plug leads attached to them, others systems have supressors and coils bolted onto the engine tappet cover. Simply unbolt the coils and pull out the surpessors if fitted. Unplug the HT leads by pulling on the head of the lead and not on the lead itself to avoid damaging the lead. Once the covers or HT leads have been removed and the spark plugs are exposed we are able to unscrew the spark plugs using our special socket or adapter with a ratchet and extension if needed.
Do not try clean out the spark plug mating surface on the engine with a screwdriver etc, as this can cause improper seating and subsequent misfiring. To avoid this I like to use a little copper slip on the threat of the spark plug which helps to not only aid in easy refitting but also gives a good earth contact to the plug itself. Well now it is simply screwing the new spark plugs in, taking care not to cross thread the plugs. Hint: screw in the new plugs by hand until you can’t turn them any longer, a torque of 20 - 25 Nm is fine or an extra half a turn when seated should suffice. Reattach the supressors, coils or HT leads, they should feel like they have clipped in usually a ‘click’ is audible.
Well done, we have nearly completed our DIY service. Fuel filters are a bit messy and always remember to be extra cautious when working on fuel systems ( potential fire hazard please be aware ). They are usually found underneath the vehicle or on the side of the engine somewhere. The changing of this involves unscrewing of a few hose clamps and uncoupling of the hoses that carry fuel through the filter. Some filters are held by a bracket. Unscrew the bracket and remove the filter. Install in reverse order keeping in mind to make sure the hoses are fitted correctly and that they are leak tight.
By now the oil should have completely drained and there should be nothing coming out of the sump plug hole. Refit the sum plug with a new washer fitted and tighten firmly, do not over tighten though. Fit a new oil filter, if the new filter is the screw on metal type, lightly oil the seal by dipping your finger in a little clean oil and lightly smearing it onto the seal. Screw back the new filter once again do not over tighten ( half turn once seated ). If not already, lower the vehicle until level, open the oil filler cap and fill the correct amount of oil minus 0,5 L. Yup you read right, fill to specification except the last half a litre or so. This you can top up when you are happy the oil level is correct. Using a funnel will help you when filling. Check the level on the dipstick is near the max mark.
Now if you have made sure that everything is tight you may crank the engine ( it my swing slightly longer than usual as the fuel filter and lines need to be filled again ). Let the vehicle idle for about 5 minutes while you inspect your handy work for leaks etc. and allow the oil to warm up. Once warm, switch off the vehicle and allow to stand for another 5 minutes allowing the oil to settle before checking and correcting the oil level, taking care not to overfill.
And there you have it, you’ve done it! Well done.
I have given you the complete basics here. There is a lot more that goes into a complete service you pay for at a dealership but this guide will keep your vehicle running along for many years to come. You may want to take your vehicle past a filling station and get the tyres pumped, radiator water checked and so on. Until we meet again, happy driving.
